Felted Flower Clippies

July 25, 2017 By: CyndiJ1 Comment

DIY Felted Flower Clippie Instructions

These are the perfect handmade gift for any little girl.  The felt rosettes are so soft, and the felt-covered clippies don’t pull on precious little locks of hair.  I made quite a few of these for my oldest daughter (when she FINALLY started to grow hair), and she still wears them today (she is 8-yrs old).  With all of the felt colors that are available today, you can make them as sophisticated or simple as you want.  Felted wool (as opposed to acrylic) is much more readily available today in craft stores, so even making a few for your girly adult friends makes a special hand-crafted gift and they look great with sweaters in the fall/winter.

DIY Felt Rosette Clippies

Instructions:

**NOTE:  I usually do not use a pattern when I make these, but I’ve attached a basic pattern for your first clippie.  After the first couple clippies that you make, you’ll get the idea on petal layers and rolled center measurements, and can draw/cut freehand shapes.  The clippie cover pattern is pretty standard, as long as you are using the regular dept. store clippie. I’ve had great luck with these:  CLIPPIES.  I haven’t seen huge variances in size. Cut felt pieces using the Felt Flower Clippie Pattern (PDF download). The pieces do not have to be exact – there is a ton of creative flexibility in this pattern!

  • Roll the center and secure with thread.  I know, I know,  you have to sew.  No worries – it’s like riding a bike.  Nothing has changed since your 4-H or home-economics class.  It’s a needle and thread.  BAM.

  • After you secure the rolled center, wrap the inside petals (flower pattern with 4 petals) around the center and AGAIN (I know, don’t roll your eyes) stitch to secure it in place.  I like to kind of “gather” it around the center so the petals hug the center.  That’s just my personal preference.  I need as many hugs as I can get.

  • After the inside petals are secure, do the same thing with the outer layer of petals (flower pattern with 5 petals).

  • FINALLY – the clippie part.  Cut the small slit into one of the felt clip cover pieces.   Push the bottom part of the metal clip through the slit.  Set the bottom aside, and secure the rosette to the top felt clippie piece (both pieces/steps are shown below).

  • The final step in your fabulous-felted-flower-clippie project is to sew the bottom/top clippie cover felt pieces together.  I LOVE to use a contrasting thread and usually use embroidery floss to give it a POP of color.
