On the extremely rare occasions that I try to dress like a grown up, it’s a matter of minutes before I’m pulling up my hair into a pony tail. The “Glamour Ship” sailed away a LONG time ago (I think it was left in the hospital after my first child was born). Instead, I opt for comfortable clothing and easy hairdos – and one of these cute DIY hair ties. These stretchy little bands are so super easy and fun to make – you’ll make one for every outfit! The design options for charms, ribbon, and elastic are endless. Wear it around your wrist like a charm bracelet, then use it for your ponytail when you pull up your hair. DIY hair ties are great for parties, sleepover crafts, back-to-school, and rainy day projects. Get ready, sister – you’ll be making a lot of these spiffy DIY hair ties for yourself, friends, and random strangers. Okay, maybe not strangers.
Let’s Do This: DIY Hair Ties!
Supplies:
- Elastic Band/Stretchy Ribbon – Hobby Lobby has a crazy selection of colors, and when they have 50% off of their rolls of ribbon – SCORE!
- Narrow (3/4″ wide or less) Ribbon – (optional) for bows on the band
- Jump Rings – for attaching charms, tassels, bows, WHATEVER to the band. Jump rings are necessary for everything you might want to add, but they are a perfect solution to getting things on the band that otherwise have a small hole.
- Charms, Tassels, and Beads – whatever you’d like to add as a personalization for your hair tie!
Instructions:
- Cut the elastic band about 10 – 11″. You will probably end up cutting it shorter when finished, but I hate to create a hair tie and not have it long enough to finish with a knot. So, I ere on the side of “cut it a little longer”.
- Put your charms, bows, tassels, etc. on large jump rings. Thread them onto the elastic band, then anchor them in place with some pony beads. This “pony-bead-anchor” step is totally optional, but sandwiching the charms between the beads holds them in place for the wrist wrap and pony tail.
To finish your totally awesome hair tie, hold both ends and make a knot. You decide how big / small you want to make your tie. I like to make it snug enough to not roll around on my wrist – but enough elastic to wrap around my pony tail 3 – 4 times.
And you’re done. Voile! Now, MAKE MORE – these are so awesome!
